About the Game
Altered Beast is a beat 'em up action game developed by Team Shinobi and published by Sega for arcades. The player controls a resurrected centurion from Ancient Greece who must rescue Zeus's daughter Athena from the demon Neff. Gameplay is a side-scrolling beat 'em up where the hero fights waves of enemies, collects Spirit Balls to grow stronger, and eventually transforms into one of five mythical beasts by collecting three power-ups. The beast forms grant unique abilities such as lightning bolts for the dragon, petrifying breath for the bear, fireballs for the tiger, or thrust attacks for the wolf. Levels are linear and feature mythological Greek-inspired environments. What makes it stand out is the innovative metamorphic transformation system and beast powers that add variety to the classic brawler combat.
