About the Game

Olympic Summer Games: Atlanta 1996 is a sports action-adventure video game for the SNES, the official title for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Gameplay features 10 track and field events with specific mechanics: sprinting uses two qualifying rounds where the winner advances; long jump, triple jump, discus, and javelin allow three attempts with the best 10 advancing to the final with three extra tries; high jump and pole vault use turns until three misses. Custom game mode lets players compete in selected events. Story is absent as players are fictional athletes in a multi-event competition to claim the most medals. Preset characters include U.S. athlete Paul, U.K. Chris, Canada David, France Kevin, Spain Gary, Japan Colin, Germany Ian, and Finland Jon; players can customize names and nationalities. What makes it stand out is the official Atlanta 1996 licensing, simple but engaging button-pressing controls for the era's button masher gameplay, and medal table ranking over points, though graphics and presentation are basic with minimal crowd elements and repetitive music.
