Lode Runner (Japan, Europe)

Lode Runner is a puzzle-platform game where you play as the Runner, a stick-figure miner who must collect all gold bars in a level and reach the exit ladder while avoiding 2-5 enemy guards that can also pick up gold. You control left/right movement, ladder climbing, and use a gun to dig horizontally and temporarily trap enemies or create shortcuts. There are 50 levels with bricks, ladders, and ropes; the game has no time limit but enemies respawn after dying. You can access level select and infinite lives via a built-in cheat menu on the SG-1000 version. What makes it stand out is the clever puzzle design where you must think ahead to trap guards or dig safe paths, creating emergent strategies that reward planning over pure reflexes. On the SG-1000, the port is faithful to the original, with excellent controls that make the digging mechanic addictive and replayable.
