Second Samurai

In the sequel to First Samurai, you play as a nameless samurai pursuing the demon king who killed his teacher. The game features time-traveling levels across prehistoric, futuristic, and feudal Japan settings. Gameplay includes side-scrolling action-platforming with co-op support for a female warrior in the Mega Drive version. Pick up scrolls for temporary sword and projectile attacks, throwing daggers for bosses, and use fists/kicks otherwise. Enemies spawn from both sides; survival subtracts from a life bar. The Demon King taunts players on black screens after losses with lines like "Give up mortal!" What stands out is the hybrid beat-'em-up/platformer design with massive bosses spanning multiple screens and bizarre enemy variety.
