Wonder Boy III - The Dragon's Trap

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is a side-scrolling action-adventure platformer for the Sega Master System where players control Wonder Boy, who is cursed into Lizard-Man form after defeating the Meka Dragon. The core gameplay involves collecting pieces of the Salamander Cross by defeating dragons to restore Wonder Boy to human form, with five animal transformations—Lizard-Man, Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man, Lion-Man, and Hawk-Man—each offering unique abilities such as flight, swimming, or enhanced strength. Progression features exploration, puzzle-solving, and boss battles across expansive worlds, with save options and charm point upgrades from equipment. The story follows directly from Wonder Boy in Monster Land, centering on the curse and the quest for the Salamander Cross. Characters include Wonder Boy/Book, the dragon antagonists, and supporting figures like the Vampire Dragon. What makes it stand out is its character progression through shape-shifting, blending Metroidvania-style non-linear exploration with RPG mechanics on the hardware.
