About the Game

XBAND is a pioneering online multiplayer modem peripheral for the SNES/Super Famicom that enabled dial-up competitive play for supported cartridge games. Players connected via phone lines to a central service for matchmaking, leaderboards, chat, and head-to-head matches using existing titles like Super Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat II/3, NBA Jam, and Killer Instinct. It featured skill-based Elo matchmaking, player profiles with avatars and taunts, and nationwide stats. What stands out is its role as one of the earliest console online services, predating modern networks by years despite the limitations of 2400 baud modems and per-connection fees.
