About the Game

Saikyō Habu Shōgi is a shogi (Japanese chess) video game developed by Seta and released in Japan on June 23, 1996, as one of the three launch titles for the Nintendo 64. Gameplay centers on traditional shogi rules with wooden pieces bearing Japanese characters, featuring standard matches, puzzle modes, reverse shogi, speed variants (10 seconds per turn), and teaching tools like rule explanations and famous match replays. It includes a single-player campaign where players must defeat 18 opponents of increasing difficulty to win the '門下生大会' (Apprentice Disciples Tournament), with all official matches by Yoshiharu Habu included in full with commentary. Characters feature Yoshiharu Habu (professional shogi player and seven-time world champion) as the featured guest and AI opponents like beginner-friendly '生方' for accessibility. What makes it stand out is Seta's high chess engine (developed by Kenjiro Kanazawa) leveraging the N64's power for speed and depth, plus deep educational content; it is a research-oriented adult title with limited sales despite its launch status.
