About the Game

Axelay is a hybrid-scrolling shooter developed by Konami for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Players control the D117B Axelay fighter to repel an invasion by the Armada of Annihilation in the Illis solar system, including the planet Corliss. The story follows a lone pilot recovering lost weapons to stop the alien threat and save the solar system. The six stages alternate between vertical and horizontal scrolling and are filled with colorful organic alien enemies and bosses. Its signature mechanic lets players equip three weapons in each stage—a forward shot, a spread shot, and bombs—and switch among them with the shoulder buttons. Taking a hit removes the currently selected weapon, while new weapons unlock as the game progresses. A pseudo-3D perspective creates dynamic views, complemented by Konami's distinctive stylized presentation.
