Dark Castle

Dark Castle is a 2D action-platformer where players control Prince Duncan, who uses a cloth tunic and a sack of rocks to throw projectiles at enemies while jumping, ducking, climbing and interacting with the environment in single-screen levels. Players must solve puzzles and collect keys to progress through four castle sections: Fireball, Shield, Trouble and Black Knight, collecting a magical shield and fireball power-up along the way before confronting the Black Knight. The game features three difficulty levels and is notorious for its weak, humorous protagonist and controls where the D-pad slowly raises Duncan's arm to aim throws. In the story, the evil Black Knight has terrorized the kingdom, so Prince Duncan must overthrow him by navigating the Dark Castle. It stands out for its quirky humor, precise but demanding aiming mechanics and the memorable 'a single elixir protects you from rat and bat bites' manual text. The port was developed by Artek Digital Productions and published by Electronic Arts on the Sega Mega Drive.
