About the Game

Famicom Bunko: Hajimari no Mori is a text adventure set in 1999 Japan where the player controls a nameless young boy who takes a train to his grandfather's village for summer vacation. After falling down a hill, he meets the mysterious youkai girl Komurasaki of the Ayakashi tribe, who can only appear at certain times and is searching for a lost item in the forest. The protagonist searches for her while interacting with villagers, including former bullies now reformed, and navigates the village's environmental issues. Gameplay involves choosing actions from a command menu, with time-limited commands and occasional puzzle or action minigames breaking up the narrative. The story explores themes of first adventures, friendship, nature preservation, and cultural traditions through clever religious and environmental imagery. It stands out for its low-fi text-heavy format, subtle social commentary, and emotional depth in a rural Japanese setting.
