In the Wake of Vampire

In the Wake of Vampire is a 2D action-platformer on the Sega Game Gear in which the player controls Dr. Ferdinand Social, a psychologist who plays with an Ouija board. The story opens in London where a series of murders is blamed on Count Dracula, but the truth is that Jack the Ripper is performing human sacrifice rituals with the help of a possessed Psychic Girl to resurrect the vampire Count Massen. The player battles through five rounds featuring varied stages: the Thames River, the House of Wax, a Cemetery leading to Castle Massen, a laboratory inside the castle, and a dungeon-like labyrinth within Castle Dracula in Transylvania. Gameplay involves collecting and switching between close-range weapons (knives, canes, rapiers, axes) and ranged weapons (pistols, bombs, boomerangs), fighting enemies like zombies, gun-toting hooligans, bats, wolves, poltergeists, skeleton knights, wizards, owls, and ghost maidens, and defeating bosses such as Jack the Ripper, the Psychic Girl, Count Massen, and Dracula. It stands out as one of the earliest and best Castlevania-style games on Sega hardware, offering responsive controls, detailed gothic graphics and atmosphere, and an original plot blending Victorian London, ritual magic, and horror.
