Adventure Island

Adventure Island is a side-scrolling platformer in which players control Master Higgins as he races across a tropical island to rescue his girlfriend Tina (known as Princess Leilani in some versions) from an evil witch doctor. Gameplay features running, jumping, and axe-throwing mechanics, with power-ups like a skateboard for invincibility and a fairy granting temporary protection. The story unfolds across eight stages filled with enemies and hazards, emphasizing exploration and survival against time-limited stages where food items restore stamina. What makes it stand out is its direct adaptation of the classic Wonder Boy formula with vibrant Japanese-style art, simple yet addictive platforming, and memorable boss fights on the Famicom platform. Released exclusively in Japan for Famicom in 1986, it launched the Adventure Island series and influenced countless side-scrollers.
